World Museum: Minkisi, Slavery and Colonialism – An International Slavery Museum Intervention
Date: 24.2.25 - 1.9.30
Time: 00:00
Location: World Museum, William Brown Street, Liverpool, L3 8EN
Artist LR Vandy’s sculpture Pomp & Circumstance is displayed alongside a collection of Minkisi figures.
A new intervention in World Museum by curators from International Slavery Museum explores the links between transatlantic slavery and colonial collections from 26 February.
Set among a display of 19th century minkisi – figures or containers of spiritual significance from the Kongo region (in present day Angola and Democratic Republic of the Congo) – LR Vandy’s artwork, ‘Pomp & Circumstance’ (2019), creates space for a new dialogue on these deeply symbolic objects.
Visitors are invited to share their own thoughts and insight, inspired by the intervention, which will help inform the shape of new displays for International Slavery Museum, due to reopen in 2028.
The display is part of ongoing work to explore how transatlantic slavery and its legacies relates beyond the International Slavery Museum to venues and collections across National Museums Liverpool.
