Liverpool DIY Cinema Clubs is a movement more than a single entity. Since the start of this year they have gained national attention for doing cinema differently. Now, they’re making sure everyone knows it.
Many of us remember A Small Cinema, downstairs in the Crown Buildings, or Empty Spaces Cinema, started after the demise of the former.
Liverpool has always had a craving for cinema done differently. These clubs break even that mood though, focussing on curating programmes of joyful major film, and activist screenings across a wide network of spaces equally dedicated to the DIY ethos.
Paraphysis Cinema, run by @Video2Nasty, focuses on showing the best or queer cult film. It’s essential for this to exist in a DIY sphere because the genre barely exists outside it.
Black Girl Watching has a programme on right now that seeks to reignite excitement about black stories in film, some that are part of significant cinematic history, but rarely get time on big or small screens in traditional spaces.
Most films in the programme are pay-what-you-can, but they rarely exceed £6 a ticket.
Fried Bananas dives deeper into the obscure, usually screening at Ship & Mitre. The basic promise being that you’re not going to see this anywhere else, so trust the obsessive cinephiles.
Find full listings for upcoming screenings at www.liverboard.org/cinema & Look out for their leaflets at many local independent venues, riso printed this month!
