Art After Dark returns: Birkenhead’s Creative Night is bigger, bolder, and bringing more art to the high street

Building on last year’s success, the free, town-wide event on Friday 20th March 2026 invites the public to explore an expanded programme of open studios, exhibitions, workshops, and demonstrations.

Following its hugely successful debut, Art After Dark is set to light up Birkenhead once again on Friday 20th March 2026. Organised by Make CIC, the free, town-wide evening event is expanding this year, teaming up with more venues to bring visitors a night of incredible art, creativity, and community engagement.

Art After Dark invites the public to explore exhibitions, tour open studios, and discover collaborations between the town’s thriving creative spaces. The event is a celebration of Birkenhead’s artistic community and a direct way to support the local high street by driving foot traffic and engagement.

The evening promises a diverse programme for all ages and interests:

  • Major Exhibition Launch at Make: The night will kick off with the exciting launch of a brand-new, month-long exhibition at Make CIC, showcasing the exceptional talent nurtured within the space.
  • Hands-on Workshops: Get creative with scheduled workshops at venues like Green Jam Creatives.
  • Live Demonstrations: See local talent in action, including demonstrations and an exhibition of local potters and creatives at Rathbone Studio.
  • Meet the Makers: Attendees will have the chance to chat directly with artists and creators through exclusive Artist Talks and during open studio hours.
  • Creative Hubs Open Late: Experience exhibitions and unique programming at spaces like Future Yard and the Williamson Gallery.

A spokesperson for Make CIC commented: “Last year was a triumph, proving the huge appetite for accessible, vibrant art in Birkenhead. This year, we’re building on that momentum by bringing even more venues into the fold. Art After Dark is a direct investment in the energy of our town, it’s about connecting artists and the community while injecting life and culture into the high street.”

Chris Torpey from Future Yard added: “We’re made up to be involved in Art After Dark again – it’s such a simple idea, but it’s a great way to showcase our corner of the Leftbank. There’s something brewing in the air around here, and we want more people to sample it and discover what lurks behind the grand facades of Birkenhead. There’s history, but there’s so much great current work going on here too; it’s a creative spirit that we want more people to discover. Art After Dark brings that to life, and is a great entry point for you to discover everything that’s bubbling away.”

The initiative builds on the foundation set last year by amazing partners and promises an evening of discovery for everyone.
