Review: Lou Miller: We Dream of Our Freedom at Bluecoat

Freedom of expression and freedom of speech feel like pretty daunting subjects. This project follows the 80th anniversary of VJ/VE day too.

Initially, it feels like dangerous political territory, but Lou Miller’s collaboration with the children of St Vincent De Paul Catholic Primary school absolutely dispelled that anxiety.

This is a show about how freedom of expression can be a tool for exceptional levels of self discovery and positive emotional engagement.

With the prompts mostly from children, audiences of all ages are invited to dream of their own freedom. And, without exception, the audience contributions are positive.

The centrepiece of the show is a coded message of hope too, which means you kind of have to play too. So from the outset, whether or not you pick up a pen, you’re part of the engaging audience, and part of the project.

It’s a beautiful exhibition that breaks down walls in a really kind way. I left this show feeling good about freedom of speech, rather than fearful of the groups who use it as a weapon.

We Dram of Our Freedom is open at Bluecoat until 8th February 2026
