Snapshot presents Snapshot 07: Tales from the Fine Art Studio. Lead by their academic tutor Maggie Ayliffe, students from Level 5 Fine Art have been tasked to unpick and ‘reverse engineer’ paintings from the John Moores Painting Prize collection currently on display at the Walker Art Gallery. Each recreating 12” square sections of a chosen painting, they have undertaken a process of research, trial, and experimentation. Revealed here is some of the testing that led them to their final outcomes, uncovering the making process and a story of the studio that is often left out within exhibition making.
Not only has this project allowed for questioning of techniques and processes, but also a questioning of the role of collections and archives as teaching tools. The John Moores Painting Prize has allowed the students to collect new methodologies that can be used develop their own studio practices further. Many of our art schools have art collections, some specifically named as teaching collections. Today this doesn’t sit in the corridors of our buildings but has been scurried away to stores and the safe walls of offices. We have perhaps forgotten the need to live with work, to really see and understand making as practice and making as meaning in the artwork.

Snapshot is a permanent display programme of sequentially changing creative outputs. It provides an impression of each participant’s practice located in a liminal space in the School, where visitors only spend fleeting moments travelling to other spaces or waiting to enter classes.
The project is the result of an ongoing open call to all visiting researchers and practitioners, staff and students of all levels on all programmes at Liverpool School of Art and Design.
It presents incomplete, transitory views of research-and-practice-in-progress; a window into a brief moment in time of a given academic year. The displays are selected on aesthetic criteria of how to best animate the space they occupy, projecting forwards in time the potential each work holds.
As the year progresses a living archive will develop on the concrete pillar next to each pair of vitrines, providing information about past and current displays.
