SUMMARY:John Lennon Art and Design Building: John Lennon Art & Design Build
ing: Snapshot 07: Tales from the Fine Art Studio
DESCRIPTION:Snapshot 07: Tales from the Fine Art Studio\n\nReception Corrid
or\, John Lennon Art and Design Building\, Liverpool School of Art and Des
 ign.\n\nOpen from December 4\, 2024\nMonday – Friday\, 9:00am – 5:00pm
\n\n--\n\nSnapshot presents Snapshot 07: Tales from the Fine Art Studio. L
ead by their academic tutor Maggie Ayliffe\, students from Level 5 Fine Ar
t have been tasked to unpick and ‘reverse engineer’ paintings from the
John Moores Painting Prize collection currently on display at the Walker
Art Gallery. Each recreating 12” square sections of a chosen painting\,
they have undertaken a process of research\, trial\, and experimentation.
Revealed here is some of the testing that led them to their final outcomes
\, uncovering the making process and a story of the studio that is often l
eft out within exhibition making.\n\nNot only has this project allowed for
questioning of techniques and processes\, but also a questioning of the r
ole of collections and archives as teaching tools. The John Moores Paintin
g Prize has allowed the students to collect new methodologies that can be
used develop their own studio practices further. Many of our art schools h
ave art collections\, some specifically named as teaching collections. Tod
ay this doesn’t sit in the corridors of our buildings but has been scurr
ied away to stores and the safe walls of offices. We have perhaps forgotte
n the need to live with work\, to really see and understand making as prac
tice and making as meaning in the artwork.\nExhibiting Artists Include:\nR
 hi Bevan\nJessie Birkett\nIndie Budd\nErin Burrows\nIndia Clarke\nGeorge F
 lynn\nM Harrison\nRachel Marchbank\nBethan Roux\nAbbie Taylor\n\n--\n\nSna
pshot is a permanent display programme of sequentially changing creative o
utputs. It provides an impression of each participant’s practice located
in a liminal space in the School\, where visitors only spend fleeting mom
ents travelling to other spaces or waiting to enter classes.\nThe project
is the result of an ongoing open call to all visiting researchers and prac
titioners\, staff and students of all levels on all programmes at Liverpoo
l School of Art and Design.\nIt presents incomplete\, transitory views of
research-and-practice-in-progress\; a window into a brief moment in time o
f a given academic year. The displays are selected on aesthetic criteria o
f how to best animate the space they occupy\, projecting forwards in time
the potential each work holds.\nAs the year progresses a living archive wi
ll develop on the concrete pillar next to each pair of vitrines\, providin
g information about past and current displays.
