Holo Programme 155 is by Liverpool artist Frances Disley (born 1976). Commissioned by the Bluecoat, it is a new acquisition for the Walker. The installation takes inspiration from Star Trek’s ‘Holodeck’, a computerised space changed by virtual reality to suit a user’s needs. Disley considers the Gallery itself to be a Holodeck, transforming it for different artistic purposes.
Following lockdown, Disley’s work reimagines the Gallery as a location for well-being and recovery. The quilt, displayed as a wall hanging, is normally intended to be laid out for people to sit on. The holodeck computer is ‘activated’ by a 20-minute audio recording called a guided visualisation. This is informed by the research of Salford University psychologists, and the visualisation is clinically proven to reduce stress and relieve pain. Listen to it here.
