Three-month residency at Westwerk, The Hamburg Ministry for Culture and Media

Three-month residency for international artists at Westwerk

The Hamburg Ministry for Culture and Media is inviting applications for eight three-month residencies in 2025 and 2026 in the Westwerk artists’ centre in Hamburg.

The residency is a residential and work grant that requires the artist to live and work at Westwerk and facilitates both work on an artistic project and networking with the Hamburg cultural scene. Westwerk is centrally located in inner-city Hamburg, in a relatively large complex of buildings on Fleetinsel that houses further studios, galleries and a small theatre.

Benefits

Rent-free provision of the 68 m² residency flat (1 large room with separate simply furnished living/working area, kitchen and shared bathroom) with WiFi.
The Ministry for Culture and Media will pay the rent for the flat during the residencies and an additional expense allowance of €900 per month per artist in residence plus travel expenses for one return journey. Grants are intended for one person.
Westwerk e.V. will be responsible for mentoring the respective artists in residence. Westwerk is an open artists’ centre with regular art and music events. This enables contacts to be made, including to the Hamburg cultural scene.
Grant recipients must take out health and personal liability insurance at their own expense for the period of residence; residence permits/visas if necessary are also the responsibility of grant recipients.
Additionally, the artists will each receive a one-off subsidy of €500 per residency towards the costs of running and organising a final presentation. The place and format of the final presentation will be agreed with Westwerk. Smaller exhibitions and media-based presentations of artistic work as part of a public event are also conceivable, as are lectures, presentations of work or discussions with artists in the bar room or possibly in the hall, and will be supported by Westwerk.

Organisation

The artists’ centre is not affiliated to a hotel business, and so grant recipients will be personally responsible for the care of the premises. Preparation of meals is also the recipients’ own responsibility. Recipients will be expected to treat the furnishings and fixtures of the accommodation with care, and the continuation of the arrangement will be dependent on this; this must be confirmed in writing. There is a no-smoking policy on the premises and unfortunately no family members or pets are permitted to live there.

During their stays, artists will have the opportunity to explore and get to know Hamburg.

Application criteria

Professional international artists resident outside Germany, from the fields of the visual arts, photography, film and multimedia and music in combination with visual arts, media or film, with an interest in the Hamburg cultural scene and the desire to network culturally in Hamburg are invited to apply for the residencies.
