As part of Rochdale Creates Sound Futures programme, Rochdale Development Agency, Voltalab and Sound Roots are looking for a Music Production Placement to help support the recording process for Rochdale’s new musical ‘Peter’s Field’ by Sean Cooney.
Background
Rochdale Development Agency has secured funding to offer a total of 8 Mid-Career Placements for Rochdale creatives, with our established partner organisations. The placements are aimed at creatives of any discipline, who have gained work and volunteering experience in organisations or through their own practice, or have recently graduated and are looking to expand their skills and experience to take the next step in their career.
The Rochdale Creates Sound Futures programme, is funded by Rochdale Borough Council, Arts Council England and UK Shared Prosperity Funding.
Sound Roots is a Rochdale music charity that helps the independent music sector to thrive and grow, specialising in the folk, roots and acoustic music genres. They are the Arts Council’s leading organisation for providing career pathways into the folk, roots and acoustic music commercial industries.
Voltalab Sound Studios is a commercial recording studio operating in the historic Cargo building. Voltalab’s hands-on, collaborative approach helps steer artists’ creativity and vision, with outstanding end results. Detailed, innovative and client-led, they help produce the best sounds in a comfortable, friendly and welcoming environment.
Purpose of the Role
As part of Rochdale Creates Sound Futures programme, we are looking for a Music Production Placement to help support the recording process for Rochdale’s new musical ‘Peter’s Field’ by Sean Cooney. You will be responsible for supporting the recording and production process of the new album. You will develop an insight into how a professional recording process is planned by shadowing the Voltalab and Sound Roots team, gaining hands-on practical experience at music production.
We would expect the placement holder to provide their own laptop / phone for the duration of the placement, although a laptop will not be required for the work in the studio.
The ideal candidate will:
- (E) Be 18 years or older on the start date of the contract
- (E) Have some experience in music production
- (E) Be an excellent communicator, experienced in communicating with a variety of stakeholders
- (E) Have a strong commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion & environmental responsibility
- (D) Have experience and a strong interest in working with artists, musicians and local communities in Rochdale
- (D) Have a proactive attitude and approach
- (D) A working knowledge of Pro Tools could help gain more experience but is not essential

Key Tasks & Responsibilities
As part of your placement you will be expected to:
- Set up required equipment (eg microphones, headphones)
- Wire up microphones, wallboxes and patchbays
- Communicate with the performers, engineer & producer throughout the session
- Shadow the engineer – setting up Pro Tools projects and interface I/O, Pro Tools operation
- Assist with pack down and reset of the studio at the end of the sessions
- Support performers with any requests such as making drinks, fetching lunch etc
- Capture & create content for social media
