We are looking for a freelance Course Tutor to design and deliver a 10-week Step Up Leading Workshops course supporting artists to develop the skills necessary to lead their own workshops.
Outside In provides a platform for artists who encounter significant barriers to the art world due to health, disability, social circumstance, or isolation.
It is an important and rare example of an organisation with national reach championing the work of artists excluded from the art world. It was formed in 2006 at Pallant House Gallery and won the Charity Award for Arts and Heritage in 2013 and the Queens Award for Voluntary Services in 2022. Outside In became an independent charity in 2017 and gained National Portfolio Organisation status with the Arts Council England in 2018.
Outside In provides a digital platform for its artists to show their work and three programmes of activity: artist development, exhibitions, and training. These activities, supported by fundraising and communications, all aim to create a fairer art world by supporting artists, creating opportunities, and influencing organisations.
The charity has developed its regional presence and now has hubs in the South of England, the Midlands and the North West with plans to develop a hub in the South West.

Step Up: Leading Workshops
Step Up is Outside In’s professional training programme, providing new skills for artists facing barriers to the art world. The programme is a key part of the charity’s work, focusing on supporting participants to gain new skills and increase opportunities for artists to take up employed, self-employed and voluntary positions in the arts. Outside In currently runs four courses: Leading Workshops, Talking About Art, Exploring Collections and Curating Exhibitions.
Leading Workshops provides a structured programme of sessions that give participants the skills and experience to deliver a creative workshop. Sessions cover all aspects of leading a workshop, from how to set up a room to what legislation you need to be aware of. The course includes a mixture of theory and practical activities and the course tutor will be at every session, providing advice and guidance throughout the course.
North West Hub for Artist Development
Outside In have been working in partnership with The Whitworth and Venture Arts to provide support and opportunities for artists in the North West who encounter barriers to participation in the arts world. The hub is able to support visual artists to professionally photograph work, create an online gallery, develop a portfolio, exhibit, find artist residencies, apply for funding and much more. The North West Hub has also hosted a Step Up Exploring Collections course at The Whitworth Art Gallery, in which participants were able to dive in and explore the incredible Musgrave Kinley Collection, and develop the skills needed to research and develop projects from an archive.
Outcomes have included 10 North West artist residencies, which culminated the exhibition, ‘This Way, That Way’ in Next Door Gallery, produced by Outside In, Venture Arts and The Whitworth.
