Job Description

The Blanket Fort Club is seeking a freelance Immersive Technologist to collaborate on the development of The Colour of Impossible Things, a new immersive, sensory-driven theatre work currently in R&D. This role is intentionally open-ended. We are looking for a creative collaborator interested in shaping ideas rather than delivering against a rigid technical brief. The work will explore how technology can support responsive, performable environments within a live theatre context. Areas of exploration may include responsive systems, haptic or tactile elements, spatial/360 audio integration, and playful interactive approaches that can be operated by performers and touring technical teams. The engagement spans multiple phases: Attendance for approximately two days during an R&D period in late March / early April 2026 with hours likely to be 9am-5pm on those days. Collaborative development and prototyping with the director, sound designer, and theatre designer (some remote work possible) for 4 days between the R&D and rehearsal dates, 9am-5pm. 4 days Input at 9am-5pm hours during a two-week rehearsal period in late June / early July 2026, with the exact days to be discussed and confirmed with the candidate. The intention is to co-develop practical, robust solutions suitable for live performance rather than complex, infrastructure-heavy systems. We welcome applications from technologists, creative coders, designers, or interdisciplinary practitioners with an interest in immersive performance, interactive environments, or creative technology in theatre. The Blanket Fort Club is committed to inclusive working practices and actively encourages applications from individuals from underrepresented backgrounds.

Job Requirements

We are interested in practitioners with experience or curiosity in one or more of the following: Creative technology for live performance or immersive work Interactive or responsive systems (sensors, triggers, physical computing, etc.) Haptic, tactile, or embodied interaction approaches Spatial or 360 audio integration Rapid prototyping and experimental development Equally important are collaborative working methods, comfort with evolving creative processes, and the ability to develop practical solutions appropriate for theatre production contexts. We welcome applications from self-taught, interdisciplinary, or non-traditional backgrounds.

Job Responsibilities

The Immersive Technologist will: Contribute ideas and approaches during the R&D process Collaborate with the director and design team to prototype responsive or interactive elements Support the development of systems suitable for performer / technician operation Provide technical insight during rehearsals to refine and stabilise solutions Help ensure developed approaches are practical, reliable, and production-appropriate This is a collaborative creative role rather than a service-delivery contract.
