A Heritage Programme Officer is required to support the Shakespeare North Playhouse team in the development and delivery of our NLHF funded project. This role is being offered on a freelance/contract basis for an estimated 1.5-2days per week (depending on the programming and activities cycle).
To celebrate the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s first folio in 2023, Shakespeare North Playhouse borrowed a first Folio to create a local exhibition on Shakespeare and the town of Prescot as part of The British Library’s ‘Treasures on Tour’. This significant exhibition was a fantastic way to launch a 12-month project, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, exploring the heritage of local language development with our local community and schools.
At Shakespeare North Playhouse (SNP), we are inspired by Prescot’s historic connections to William Shakespeare and a real love of storytelling. Since opening in July 2022, we have welcomed over 100k visitors to the venue, 10% of which had never visited a theatre before. We work to be open and inclusive, to demonstrate the enduring relevance of Shakespeare’s work and to use heritage and the arts to bring opportunities for enjoyment, skills development and educational attainment to the people of Prescot.
Inspired by the richness of Shakespeare’s language and the first Folio, we will delve into the history of Knowsley and the surrounding area, working with audiences young and old to explore the factors that influence language development including industry, popular culture, social structure and migration. Beginning with the language inventions by Shakespeare, we will go on a journey with our community, discovering the local factors that influenced language in Knowsley and how developments may or may not be evident in local vernacular today.
