Call for Submissions, ‘Art, Science And Creativity’ Book Art Exhibition

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

‘ART, SCIENCE and CREATIVITY’   BOOK ART EXHIBITION

Liverpool Book Art is curating another major exhibition of Book Art in 2024. We have decided to take a different approach this year, as set out below, rather than celebrating a significant anniversary (unless you count the fact that our first exhibition took place 10 years ago!). Liverpool Book Art is now inviting submissions from artists who wish to participate.

Our starting point is a quote from Albert Einstein:

“Where the world ceases to be a stage for personal hopes, aspirations, and desires, and we stand before it as free creatures, full of admirations, questions and contemplation, we enter the realm of art and science. If we describe what we see and experience in the language of logic, we do science; if we convey connections through forms that are inaccessible to the rational mind, but intuitively recognisable as making sense, we do art.”

Creativity is central to exploration in both art and science. And as we wonder, and attempt to understand our worlds and the universe – and hence ourselves and humanity – categories can, and perhaps should, become blurred. Distinctions can be both valuable and problematic: ‘art’ versus ‘science’, ‘nature’ versus ‘human’, ‘natural’ versus ‘supernatural’, ‘material’ versus ‘spiritual’,  ‘secular’ versus ‘religious’ and so on. As the great science-fiction writer Arthur C Clarke said: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”.

Artists are invited to bring their own creativity and imaginations to consider this broad theme. We are keen to receive proposals which involve the creation of new book art. In addition, in recognition of LBA’s 10 years of exhibiting, we are also happy to receive submissions of already created artist’s books, including relevant works shown by LBA in previous years.

Liverpool Book Art’s long-standing collaboration with Liverpool Central Library continues in 2024. The exhibition will open there on 3rd September in the magnificent Hornby room, and run until the end of October.

Previous Liverpool Artists’ Book Exhibitions have been a great success, attracting international submissions of the highest quality, with works from Japan, Australia, Russia, USA, and across Europe and the UK. We are open to, and encourage, submissions from across the diverse range of book art– multiples and unique works; narratives & non-narratives; sculptural works and altered books….

The formal application process is now open on http://www.curatorspace.com/ which includes full details of how to apply, selection dates, and timetable for delivery. The Call closes on 27th May 2024. NB This is the deadline for proposals, not completed works!
