Liverpool Cathedral is one of the most visited places in Liverpool, attracting over 500,000 visitors a year. In addition to being a beautiful place of worship, we welcome people of all faiths and backgrounds to encounter our heritage and experience our arts & cultural programme.
A new exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist An ish Kapoor will open on Saturday 10th August. One of the most innovative and influential artists of our time, Kapoor is renowned for his iconic works, such as Cloud Gate in Chicago and the Orbit Tower in London. This landmark exhibition, titled Monadic Singularity, marks the first time Kapoor presents a solo exhibition in a UK Cathedral and brings his extraordinary art to the North-West for the first time in over 40 years since his show at the Walker Art Gallery in 1983.
Monadic Singularity brings together works that offer an experience of the sublime that is rooted in the corporeal. Staged in the spiritual context of the Cathedral, where significant moments in life such as birth and death are celebrated and ritualised, these artworks in all their evocation of the body, provide connection and inspire awe. Kapoor’s work is saturated in the sense of an unknown that we unconsciously know, and his use of materials to manipulate our perception of the knowable to alter our understanding of objects, has born a unique sculptural language that inhabits a space of becoming and potential. Pigment, stone, steel, wax and silicone are engineered to the point of a dissolution of boundaries between the material and the immaterial. Featuring works spanning the past 25 years, this exhibition offers the opportunity to experience a selection of Kapoor’s monumental works in dialogue with the incredible cathedral’s gothic architecture. This landmark show is a highlight in Liverpool Cathedral’s year -long centenary celebrations, commemorating its consecration in 1924.
Role Summary:
Help us celebrate our centenary year by supporting with an exciting new exhibition. This is a short-term volunteering opportunity to help during a unique and inspiring show, operating to a shift pattern of up to four hours a day. Liverpool Cathedral is a seven day a week operation. We need volunteers from Saturday 1Qth August to Sunday 15th September. There will be shifts available in the morning, afternoon and the evening. There will be also a mandatory familiarisation day prior to the exhibition opening to the public – the date will be confirmed in due course. As an Arts and Culture Volunteer, you will support front of house. ensuring all visitors to the Cathedral have a safe and enjoyable experience.
We welcome volunteers with a passion for arts and culture, excellent communication, and team skills. There may also be other events for which we need help throughout the year that includes events, exhibitions, and installations.
When:
- You will need to attend a mandatory Health and Safety briefing and a familiarisation day TBC prior to the opening of the show.
- You will be able to commit to a minimum of four shifts lasting a minimum of four hours.
- Lunch break lasts 30 minutes.
- You will be available to volunteer between 10th August and 15th September.

- To learn information about the artist and the artworks.
- To supervise the artworks and to answer questions from the public about the artworks.
- To ensure the safety of the artworks as well as visitors.
- To give directions to visitors.
- To follow any instructions given by the Duty Management team.
- To work in compliance with the Cathedral’s policies on Safeguarding and Health and Safety.
- Attend any briefings or training required for the role.
- Help to encourage visitors to donate to the Cathedral and understand our cause for support.
- Any other requirements as directed by the Enterprise Department.

- Willing to get stuck in with anything on a busy day.
- Volunteers may be required to stand for extended periods of time.

This is a key role for those who wish to commit to short term volunteering and want to gain experience in the Arts and Cultural sector.
This role is purely voluntary and does not form a binding contract.
There is no requirement for a Disclosure and Barring Service Check for this role, but you will be asked to sign a Self-Declaration Form.
