Live Read 1-3 March 2011

Anything that encourages book-reading is good and this online event includes some arty elements.

A series of three art trail podcasts in which Dr Laura MacCulloch, director of British art at the Walker, takes us on a tour of the gallery’s works with literary links. They include Fantine, from Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables, by Margaret Hall;  Harriet Goodhue Hosmer’s sculpture of Puck from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and a bust of American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow by Hosmer’s pupil Edmonia Lewis; Sophie Anderson’s Elaine, the beauty jilted by Sir Launcelot, and Ophelia from Shakespeare’s Hamlet by Henrietta Rae.

There’s also a gallery of illustrations from the Mr Benn children’s story books, which Tate Publishing is reprinting to tie in with Tate Liverpool’s Magritte exhibition (Mr Benn’s appearance was based on the man in bowler hats in Magritte’s paintings) and a video filmed at Tate Liverpool about how Alice in Wonderland has influenced a diverse range of artists.
