World of Glass – ‘Industry’

23 January – 14 March 2010

‘Industry’ shows the latest work of local artist Tony Garner. Using acrylics, watercolours and oil pastels, Tony uses his own distinctive painting technique to paint rural and urban landscapes.

Merseyside’s industrial landscape may not offer the most picturesque subject matter for a painter.  But factories, chimneys and canals are a real inspiration to Tony Garner.

And Liverpool’s Stanley tobacco warehouse – the world’s largest brick-built warehouse – is among his favourite subjects.

“It’s impressive because of its sheer size and there’s just something about it that made me want to paint it,” said Tony whose new exhibition ‘Industry’ is currently running at The World of Glass in St Helens.

The warehouse is also one of the targets of the Echo’s Stop the Rot campaign which aims to bring Liverpool’s remaining historic landmarks back to life.

Tony took up painting over 15 years ago and admits he finds inspiration in the raw power of industrial landscapes.

He works in acrylics, watercolours and oil pastels and other favourite subjects include Birkenhead’s Grade 2 listed East Float hydraulic tower  and scenes around his home town of St Helens.

Tony’s paintings won him an award for landscape paintings at the St.Helens Open Art Competition 2008.
