Not Just Collective Present: Clandestine, featuring work by: Barrett & Cribley, India Cawley-Gelling, Barbara Harrison, Catherine Harrison, Andy Johnson, Becky Peach, Graham Rimmer, Nicola Roscoe-Calvert, Tom Ross, Gosia Smolenska, Wendy Williams
Built within the first few decades of the 1800s under control of a retired tobacco merchant, Joseph Williamson, speculation surrounding the purpose of the construction of the Williamson Tunnels continues today. Rumored to be secretive about his motives, theories include that Williamson belonged to a religious sect building the tunnels as a haven from Armageddon. Others believe it was an act of charity to create seemingly meaningless jobs to keep locals in the area employed.
Not Just Collective is a creative collective, formed by volunteers of the Liverpool Biennial 2012 who share mutual desire to contribute to Liverpool’s vibrant DIY arts culture, supporting artistic practice in the local and wider area.
In this exhibition, curated by Becky Peach and Nicola Roscoe-Calvert, 11 artists explore the essence of mystery surrounding the tunnels. Presenting a range of two-dimensional and three-dimensional works in a wide range of media, the exhibition is a platform of discovery, examining elements of folklore, ritual, decay, preservation and memory.
