After his failed marriage to Effie Gray, Victorian art critic John Ruskin fell passionately in love with Rose La Touche, who died before they could marry. Ruskin was at first inconsolable, but gradually found inspiration in his loss, with the help of his friend and protégé, painter Edward Burne-Jones. The talk, by Cristina Pascu-Tulbure, explores some of the art which fuelled and was inspired by the friends’ endless discussions on the nature of love and beauty; it is based on the last chapter of Cristina’s book, Burne-Jones: Ruskin’s Modern Painter, which will be published this summer by Peter Lang.
