Wirral Society of Arts ‘Open’
2 October – 14 November 2010
The Wirral Society of Arts is this year staging its 5th Wirral Society of Arts National Open Art Exhibition at the Williamson Art Gallery. It is open to all artists throughout the United Kingdom.
The Society was founded with the co-operation of Will C. Penn. He was a Wirral resident, Head of the Painting School and Vice Principal of Liverpool College of Art. Penn’s work is well represented in the collections at the Williamson Art Gallery. A preliminary meeting was held on 5 June 1948 in the Lady Lever Art Gallery where their first exhibition was held in 1949. The second exhibition was held in 1951 at the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum in Birkenhead where the Society has been based ever since. Will C. Penn became their first President.
Every second year this event is opened to every artist in this country who wishes to submit.  Prizes total over £2,000.
The exhibition brings national artists to exhibit on Wirral, creates new audiences for our own fine museum and attracts new visitors from around Great Britain to Merseyside.
Part of the Independents Liverpool Biennial strand.
