London born painter Phil Morsman lives in a church tower, uses the chancel as his studio and the nave as an exhibition space.
It’s the wonderful mountain terrain of Cumbria, though, that provides inspiration for many of his vibrant paintings.
Described as ‘abstract landscapes with vibrant sweeps of colour’, an exhibition of paintings by Phil Morsman opens this week at View Two.
Phil studied art in London and Sheffield and eventually settled in Appleby-in-Westmorland, buying the redundant St Michael’s Church as his new home. Calling himself a ‘shambler’ rather than a serious fell-walker, Phil often finds ideas for his work while out wandering the hills and valleys of the surrounding area.
“I rarely use a sketch book on my walks, but I absorb the views and surroundings and the feel of the landscape, so my paintings generally have a landscape connection and basis but are more about the abstract image on the canvas. I also like to look at other forms of landscape representation like maps, aerial photographs and satellite images of the earth from space, which all seeps into my work.”
This new exhibition will be a welcome return to View Two after 14 years by Phil Morsman following a successful exhibition in 2001.
