Wilfred Owen Gallery – Cross-Words

Cross-Words: art by Tom Allport at the Wilfred Owen Story & Gallery. 19 April to 14 May 2011, (Open: Tuesday – Saturday 11-14.00).When illness forced Tom Allport to retire from his day job, the Wallasey based artist reached a crossroads in his life but having more time for creativity and free of the daily grind he regained his sense of direction and began to paint full time.

Taking his subjects from daily life and often the emotions that we keep hidden for fear of being perceived as weak or vulnerable, Tom’s work has a sensitive honesty and is free of pretension.  Tom’s expression also takes the form of poetry and is often used to describe the subject of his artwork.

A member of the Wallasey art group, he has had work exhibited at the Williamson Art Gallery and is now presenting his first solo exhibition at the new Wilfred Owen Story and Gallery in Argyle Street, Birkenhead.  The gallery features the UK’s first permanent commemoration of Wilfred Owen who lived in the town.

Tom donated his powerful visual depiction of the futility of war entitled ‘Crossing‘ to the galleries grand opening last month and so impressed the organisers that they invited Tom to be their next exhibiter.

His fusion of pictures and words takes its title from the donated piece and is called ‘Cross-Words’ and runs from Tuesday 19th April to Saturday 14th May, 11.00am – 2.00pm
