Mark Chapman is an artist who uses skills developed from photography and graphic design to produce his digital art. He has a degree in Digital Graphic Design from the University of Huddersfield and has taught art, design and creative media at various colleges in the North West. Much of his digital art is based around the themes of symmetry, recycling and regeneration, which he has brought together for this new exhibition at dot-art under the banner of “Symmetria”.
“Over the last thirty years the city of Liverpool has been completely transformed, starting with areas around the Albert Dock, and more recently areas such as the Baltic Triangle. Old buildings are regenerated and then reused for a different purpose by a new generation of inhabitants. This transformation in the city has provided some inspiration for these artworks.”
The artworks on show use architectural abstracts, urban textures, and a combination of traditional and digital image manipulation techniques. The first set of artworks are based around architectural symmetry – often looking at the more functional parts of cities, such as car parks and stairways. The second set of artworks are based around urban textures such as corroded materials and graffiti. These are often seen as ugly parts of the city, but by creating a symmetrical composition they become new and beautiful artworks. The final set of symmetrical artworks are inspired by these architectural abstracts and urban textures. Using various painting and printing methods, unusual shapes are created, which are then manipulated digitally to produce the symmetrical work.
