Born in Romania in 1926, and working for much of her life within a Communist state, Brătescu’s vivid practice has manifested as performance, textile work, paper collage and film. This introduction to Brătescu’s singular vision comprises a selection of works from 1960 to the present day which showcases her commitment to the drawn line, whether created in fabric with a sewing machine, by the body performing through space, or found within her detailed classical draughtsmanship. It reveals a consistency of independent purpose and design persisting across decades.
