St George’s Hall now hosts its own orchestra-in-residence L ’Orchestra dell’Arte who this season are bringing three concerts under the musical direction of their conductor Edward Peak. Edward is widely known to music lovers in the region from his career with the RLPOand BBC.
The refurbishment of the world famous Willis organ with its 7737 pipes means that after a gap of many years it can be heard once more in some of the best works written for organ and live orchestra. The organ was originally built as the largest concert organ in the world in 1855.
Following the wonderful Elgar Heritage Concert last November the halls great organist, Prof Ian Tracey, will be the soloist in “Superbe”, an evening of beautiful music from France. Ian will play the inspiring Concerto For Organ – Strings and Timpani by Poulenc, also the majestic Saint-Saens Symphony No. 3 (Organ Symphony) and excerpts from Massenet’s Le Cid will complete this programme. Ian has previously commercially recorded both these organ pieces but is delighted to be performing them live on this famous Henry Willis organ in St George’s Hall.
