Heart Variations is a project about the music of our body. Last year artist Egle Mei recorded people’s ECGs (heart electrocardiographs) in Liverpool hospitals and encoded them into notes, working with two composers Meike Holzmann and Ian Stephens, who came up with two beautiful compositions for string quartet. The compositions are organized by main ideas and have a story line: over-consumption, self-alienation, awareness, hope and love.
This year they delivered cross-curricular science and music school workshops across the North West. Mei recorded students’ brainwaves and converted them into notes with the IBVA brainmachine. Students have created their compositions from these brain rhythms, so as a part of the performance we will announce winners of the Young Composer’s Awards.
Heart Variations will tour across the North West: Liveprool, St Helens, Burnley, Fleetwood and Preston. The Liverpool String Quartet, featuring Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra musicians, will perform Ian Stephen’s, Meike Holzmann’s and the students’ compositions.
