The one day symposium is aimed at people interested in contemporary art and ‘difference’ including artists, people with or affected by disability, professionals, academics and students in related fields of study. Taking the issues raised by the accompanying exhibition, SLIPPAGE: The Unstable Nature of Difference, as its starting point the day offers the opportunity to explore questions, through the work of the contributing artists, about the uncertain boundaries of physical and psychological identity.

Contemporary Art Space Chester, The University of Chester, CH2 2LB

Contributors include:

Alexa Wright: Reader in Visual Culture at the University of Westminster and practicing visual artist working with video, sound and interactive media. She is author of Monstrosity, the human monster in visual culture which explores modern and contemporary representations of behavioural and psychological difference as well as looking historically at physical difference.

Karen Heald and Susan Liggett: Karen is an artist, Honorary Research Fellow in Social Sciences and Lecturer in Fine Art at Bangor University. Susan is an artist and Reader in Fine Art, Glyndwr University. Their

collaborative project In-Between-ness explores issues related to mental health and creativity.

Daksha Patel: Artist and researcher whose work responds to digital systems that scan and map the human body. She is interested in how the artist’s drawing may offer new insights into embodiment. Daksha currently has a solo show Bodytopos at Touchstones Gallery, Rochdale.

Catherine Long is a performance artist/dancer. Central to her work is the individual and collective body with a focus on observation and perception. A key aim of her work is for people to gain insight into how perceptions of ourselves are shaped by our perceptions of others.
