Liverpool Academy of Arts: Better Community – Better Life

7-16 June 2011 at Liverpool Academy of Arts, Seel St. ‘Better Community Better Life Art Exhibition’

The purpose of the Better Community Better Life is to facilitate dialogue between the young people of the UK and overseas by developing sustainable school partnerships through collaboration projects about community life. This project has been funded by the British Council as part of their Connecting Classrooms Scheme.  It involves a group of Sefton schools and their partner schools in Chongqing in South West China.  The project rationale being that “we learn in our home, we learn in our school, we learn in our community”. Thus, the project aims to enable students to connect with their local community, understand their place within it and play a small part in its development.

The Art work from the Sefton schools is based upon a photographic competition which took place in the schools last year the title being “A walk round here”.  The photographs of the local environment of the schools were then used as stimuli for the art work produced by the pupils whose ages range from six years to fourteen years.

The project continues with a community action programme relevant to each school the aim being to improve their local community.  The Action Plans drawn up by the school are shown as part of the exhibition as are the original photographs taken for the competition.
