Wirral Festival of Firsts: Wirral Symphonic Wind Band

unnamed-112 July 2014

19.30

Tickets: £8

On an especially festive day for Hoylake, this platinum award winning wind orchestra brings us a celebration of popular classics.  Wirral Symphonic Wind Band was formed in 1987, and is made up of approximately 50 members of the local community, aged 18-70.  Their members come mostly from the Wirral peninsula, but a small number also travel from Liverpool, Warrington and North Wales.

The band rehearses once a week, performing a minimum of 4 concerts a year, mainly within the local area.  The band helps members to build on their musical and ensemble skills, while a strong element gives us our team spirit.  The band is currently made up of a wide variety of local residents, from students and teachers to doctors and zookeepers; and it is this broad range of skills and experience that makes the band so archetypal of a community wind band.

The band celebrated its 25th anniversary in October 2012 – a milestone commemorated in a special grand concert in Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight.  In 2013 the band received the highest level of recognition in the National Concert Band Festival in Birmingham, coming home with a Platinum Award.  The criteria for this award includes: excellent tone quality, excellent intonation, wide dynamic range, excellent rhythmic accuracy, phrasing showing a high degree of understanding and presentation, and a mastery of style throughout.
