‘Inside Outside’ Peter Griffiths – Andrew G Magee
17 February –
Although disparate in nature, Peter Griffiths and Andrew Magee’s work both respond to the presence of space, one in relation to the built environment and one that addresses an internal and imagined region. The coupling of two such different artists gives us the opportunity to consider the role of the individual in lived and metaphorical spaces.
Peter is a printmaker working at Hot Bed Press Salford using mainly etching techniques and screenprinting, sometimes combined. His subjects are architecturally based derived from his native Liverpool with iconic buildings or features having prominence. Some are rendered in abstract form but all are intended to capture the atmosphere and substance of this great Seaport City.
Andrew’s practice incorporates a number of techniques including painting, printmaking, photography and drawing. His work is primarily focused on the parallels between art and hermetic and pseudo-spiritual and occult practices. He makes beautiful work that at once confronts and inspires the viewer by combining classicism with occult and esoteric imagery.
Although disparate in nature, Peter and Andrew’s work both respond to the presence of space, one in relation to the built environment and one that addresses an internal and imagined region. In Peter’s work the viewer is forced to look up and feel dwarfed by a series of architectural monoliths, past which we strain to see the sky. In Andrew’s work the internal space is no less vast, but claustrophobic with layers of paint and populated by symbols and archetypes from our collective unconscious. The coupling of two such different artists gives us the opportunity to consider the role of the individual in lived
and metaphorical spaces.
