Confectionery
Joël Penkman grew up in New ZeaIand and moved to the United Kingdom in 2003 after graduating from Fine Arts at
Canterbury University, Christchurch.
It should be no surprise from her paintings that she also works as a graphic designer and this has influenced her pieces which are often graphic and meticulous.
Much of her work is painted using egg tempera, a medium that requires particular patience and planning. She is interested in finding and celebrating the beauty in the detail of everyday life.
Her work in this exhibition playfully examines the enjoyment of food and eating in England and her own delight in those pieces of confectionery that seem to describe the English so well.
