The Cornerstone Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new works by Tony Smith.
The compositional structure of Pillar and Post is informed by visits and photographic documentation of a particular derelict and iconic Liverpool music venue from the late 1970s.
The paintings have been developed via a mark making and layering process that reflect certain surfaces and the décor of the dilapidated venue.
Whilst the works dialogue is concerned with a particular space, it also takes into account aspects of culture from a time gone by when youth culture was fractionalised and less homogenous than at present. The outcome of this materialises via a meeting point of incompatible materials, glazes and clash in colour and drawing as an act of investigation.
The Paintings are made in an organic way with emotive gestural marks often tempered by a rationale and the ordered destruction of any recognisable features.
Tony Smith is Fine Art Lecturer at Liverpool Hope University and Gallery Director at Arena Studios Liverpool.
