Ceri Hand – These Living Walls of Jet

imageThese Living Walls of Jet
5 July – 2 August 2008

Eleven artists who weave contemporary and historical references – from the baroque to the renaissance – with folklore and the treacherous natural world, to reveal absurdity in our quest for stability and perfection and the fragility of sexuality, memory and subjectivity.

Artists: Craig Atkinson, Henny Acloque, Eleanor Moreton, Rebecca Stevenson, Martyn Cross, Hayley Lock, Petros Chrisostomou, Samanatha Donnelly, Mimei Thompson, Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács

Photographs, sculpture, drawings, collages and paintings exhibit a range of artist’s strategies for disrupting the real and reflect on contemporary consumption and desire. Seductive and repelling, the works employ subtle humour and the incongruous to undermine the vices and follies that beset humankind.

Ceri Hand Gallery launches in Liverpool on 4th July 2008, during the year the city holds the European Capital of Culture title.
Ceri Hand Gallery is Liverpool’s first international contemporary commercial art gallery, showcasing and selling cutting edge contemporary art.

The gallery will provide the opportunity to see and buy some of the most exciting work being produced internationally.
The gallery will also provide emerging and mid-career international artists curatorial support and input, exhibitions in the UK and overseas, publishing opportunities on and offline and access to new networks.

Ceri Hand Gallery will be based in a converted warehouse space at 12 Cotton Street – a pioneering move to North Liverpool, contributing to the ongoing regeneration of the city.

With over 150 square meters of gallery space, Ceri Hand Gallery will give artists potential to further their practice and career and find new audiences and collectors for contemporary art.
The gallery contributes to establishing a tangible legacy for 2008 – a flourishing art market based within Liverpool, attracting international collectors, artists and investment to the city, complimenting the excellent existing public arts infrastructure.
There will be one exhibition per month, free to the public, including a mix of international and North West talent.
The gallery currently represents ten artists from the UK, with their work available to buy at the gallery all year round.
