Ceri Hand Gallery – 20/21

patrick-heron20/21 is a special event, which runs from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 March 2011 at Ceri Hand Gallery and stars over 75 works by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, Georges Braque, Eduardo Paolozzi, Bridget Riley, Paula Rego, Peter Blake and Antony Gormley.

The Ceri Hand Gallery is delighted to announce an exclusive opportunity to view and purchase a wide selection of original and editioned works by some of the foremost artists of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

Over these limited dates visitors can view some of the most important names in post war 20th century British art, covering all the key movements and schools.

Pieces by John Moores Painting prize-winners Mary Martin, John Hoyland, Bridget Riley and Mick Moon are displayed alongside work by Antony Gormley, whose Another Place is the pride of nearby Crosby beach.

For sale is screenprint F for Football by the ‘Godfather of British Pop art’ Sir Peter Blake (1991), best known for his design of the Beatles’ album cover Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and more recently, his updated version of the same, composed with famous figures from Liverpool history for the city’s successful European Capital of Culture campaign. Also on show is work by typographer Gordon House, who assisted Blake with designs for the Sgt. Pepper cover and produced the typography for the Beatles’ White Album.

20/21 is an excellent opportunity to see works by internationally acclaimed stars such as Pablo Picasso and pop art grandees Andy Warhol and Eduardo Paolozzi up close.

On display and for sale is Picasso’s Le Repos du Sculpteur devant un Nu a la Draperie (1922), one of the most beautiful pure line etchings from La Suite Vollard, his most famous series of etchings. The series dates from the post-cubist, neo-classical phase of his career and predominantly focuses on the role of the artist and his relationship with his muse, this example showing the reclining figure of Picasso and a bust in profile behind him of Marie Therese, his partner at the time.

In addition the show covers some of the key movements and schools in 20th century British and European art:

The Op art movement, a dazzling experiment in the perceptual aspects of art resulting in the illusion of movement, is highlighted with career-spanning works by Bridget Riley, arguably the most widely known Op artist alive today and the leading exponent of the movement in Britain. In addition 20/21includes a group of works published by the Denise René Gallery, Paris, which post-1945 was the most significant gallery to promote Op Art. European and South American artists represented include Victor Vasarely, Jesus Raphael Soto, Francisco Sobrino, Julio le Parc and Carlos Cruz-Diez.

The abstract art of St Ives, including works by Patrick Heron and William Scott, features alongside work by Michael Craig Martin – a key figure in the first generation of conceptual artists who, as a tutor at Goldsmith’s College, London, had a significant influence on two generations of young British artists, most notably Damien Hirst.

Figurative works are represented by artists Paula Rego and Craigie Aitchison. Over the last decade Rego has become one of the most sought after European artists: Born in Portugal, Rego’s baroque imagery hints at hidden secrets and desires, in particular her prints depicting
children’s stories, which draw heavily upon Goya’s famous Los Caprichos for their influence. By contrast Aitchison’s work is quiet and contemplative, his images of crucifixions reminiscent of proto Renaissance masters such as Giotto.
