Doug Jones: Inservi Deo et Laetare. Exhibition: 15 August to 11 September 2008
As a child from a long family line of Freemasons, Jones has always been fascinated by the secret aprons his father kept in a box in the study, and the books which detailed the ceremonies the Masons performed behind closed doors.
Titled after his old school motto, Jones’ exhibition introduces the remarkable lives and philosophies of The Brotherhood of Saints (BHS), established in 1573 by Zadok Nathan Solomon Jones (following the infamous Battle of the Green Flower).
Intensely secretive, with complex regulations and ideologies, Jones playfully reveals the BHS’ Bosch-like practices, exhibited through their intricately embroidered robes, mitres, stolls and banners from their daily rituals.
