After a short break, the Bridewell Gallery begins its 2008 programme with a major group exhibition.

Drawing together six artists whose work deals with narrative, illusion and the built environment, The Liar, the Witch and the Wardrobe explores the human inclination to experience buildings as vessels for memory and imagination: the psychological topography of real and imagined pasts. Spanning the Bridewell’s gallery space and prison cell corridor, these works are enriched by their context, serving as spectres of imagined histories and examining the tension between historical spaces and new-build architecture in the regenerating city.

The exhibition is complemented by two events. On Friday 13 June, we will be hosting a storytelling evening in which Liverpool-based storyteller John Hughes will lead a 40-minute tour of the Bridewell, weaving together fact, fiction and speculation. Our closing event, on Friday 27 June, will consist of short animated films examining the relationship between escapism and intimate space.

Storytelling evening: a walk around the Bridewell with storyteller John Hughes. Friday 13 June, 8pm. £2.
Closing event: ‘A Journey Around My Room’ – an evening of short animated films. Friday 27 June, 7.30pm. Free.
