Exile on Bold Street
5 – 14 November 2010 (Extended)
Exile on Bold Street is an exhibition of new and recent paintings by Liverpool based artists Gareth Kemp and Nick Sykes.  The exhibition is part of Independents Liverpool Biennial 2010
Gareth Kemp trained in Art History rather than Fine Art, and like Nick Sykes, graduated in 1995.  His work is held in many private collections both in the UK and the USA. Kemp often works from photographs, mentally cutting and pasting between photographs and merging images, resulting in repetitions and occlusions in the finished works.  The paintings create a sense of unease and often contain figures that appear at odds with the world in which they inhabit.
Nick Sykes graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 1995. Since then he has exhibited nationally and internationally. Sykes recent works combine deft colour selection and layers of mark making coupled with almost reckless selection of high quality oil, and low quality household paints. This process results in a natural sense of harmony in composition; an abstract landscape where the artist finds space in the solitude he creates.  Sykes has sold his work widely and is included in the art collections of Paul Smith (fashion designer), Raymond Blanc (Chef) and Alan Bleasedale (writer).
