Manchester-based designer Joseph Hartley makes useable objects by hand from the simplest materials. His pure and honest forms, which feature virtually no decoration or surface treatment, are hard-wearing, playful and intended to be used and enjoyed often.
Hartley believes that food and design have much in common. His current collection. ‘The Makery’ is a series of objects designed to be sympathetic towards the making and eating of bread in the home. Inspired by the simplicity of sourdough bread, which uses just three ingredients, his work mirrors mirrors this simplicity by using just three materials: wood, clay and fabric.
