116 little paintings by the young people of Cheshire Young Carers who express their emotions involved in caring for family members.
Throughout 2013 the young carers from across Cheshire having been creating art panels. The art works were created using materials provided by the Chester Decorative Fine Arts Society. The body of work has now reached over 100 panels each created by young carers or inspired by their words. Some panels strive to reflect how they, the young carers feel about being a young carer whilst others have expressed what they like and enjoy as individuals.
The project was and is about encouraging the young carers to express themselves creatively. Those who took on the challenge of creating a panel to reflect their thoughts or emotions about being a young carer talked about the difficulty of this. For many being a young carer has both negative and positive aspects and the words and statements used by the young carers would often be opposites from loving being able to support and help to hating the pressure and responsibility. Common themes emerged; a need for time, a sense of pressure, responsibilities, stress, seeking a balance between own issues / life and those of the people they care for, pride, being happy, taking time enjoy every moment and joy. The young carers and CYC volunteers have tried to present these and more within their panels. For other it was the simple joy and pleasure of painting and creating something they like and enjoy.
The project has been a catalyst for others arts based projects and the materials donated by Chester DFAS will continue to enable CYC to run arts activities within its weekly activity groups.
