Arena Gallery: Something to do With Death by Paul Bywater

10 May – 9 June

This May, Arena Studios & Gallery showcases a collection of drawings by studio member Paul Bywater in association with Liverpool Art Month and Light Night.

In his debut solo exhibition, the Liverpool-based painter will be presenting 30 brand-new and highly-detailed graphite portraits which are the fruition of several months’ activity.

Since November of last year the artist has been working exclusively on this series, which marks a new direction and radical change in technique from his previous work.

Along with the drawings themselves, sketchbooks will also be on display to offer further insight into the artist’s practice. All pieces are available to buy and the exhibition has been curated (and elegantly framed) by the artist himself. The show will appeal especially to those with an interest in skilful draughtsmanship and a traditional approach to drawing and painting; Fans of the films of Sergio Leone in particular will have plenty to take in!

Describing his new work as “saturnine and anonymous characters with weather beaten, craggy features… not only portraits but landscapes which convey a mythical gravitas all of their own”, the artist also intends this as the prologue for a forthcoming series of paintings to be exhibited later in the year.

Arena Gallery, 1st Floor, Elevator Building, 27 Parliament Street, Liverpool, L8 5RN
Opening times are 11.00 – 18.00 Thursdays to Sundays.

Arena Studios & Gallery will be open to the public for the Exhibition Preview on Thursday 9 May 18.00– 21.00 and also on the Light Night, Friday 17 May 18.00 – 21.00.

The artist will be present at both events to greet visitors, and to answer any questions about his work and plans for the future.

Admission is free and all are welcome.
