Trying to explain what METAFEX is to someone prior to the event is a bit like trying to explain what a particular color looks like to someone who is blind.
There are no peripheral definitions of what the event is as a whole, so to truly understand METAFEX, one must participate. There are no rules about how one expresses themselves at this event (save the rules that serve to protect the health, safety, and experience of the community at large); rather, it is up to each participant to decide how they will contribute and what they will give to this community.
The event takes place within The Art Organisation Liverpool’s Ropewalks Project and marks the culmination of TAO Liverpool’s input into the 2008 Biennial. From TAO’s multi-use art spaces a collective will emerge and engage the people of Liverpool with this roaming, urban exploration of indoor/outdoor relational art, a hyper-creative grassroots performance that will take place throughout the city, from the parks to famous landmarks, in buildings, in open air, and under canvas.
The experience will unfold over two weeks, and crescendos on the 23rd November with various events running alongside and in between performances of scripted scenes. Artists, musicians, actors and street performers alike will act as focal points for the audience’s interaction with the city, incorporating a variety of existing community groups and temporary artistic events that are occurring simultaneously throughout this period.
