Richard Creed: Living in a Sea Shell – University Art Gallery
Didn’t realise it was an open day at the University today, the campus was even more crowded than usual but this gallery in Abercromby Sq is always a quiet haven. There’s 3 floors full of all kinds of stuff including some Turners, Augustus Johns and Epstein.
Special exhibitions are always on the top floor and, as in this case, if there’s too many pieces to fit in the room they spread out on to the stairwell.
All the paintings are abstract – very abstract – which is fine but these just didn’t do it for me, apart from a couple. There are several watercolours and small canvases which show the artists preparatory work. Quite a few of these sketches and one of the oils is an interpretation of Abercronmby Sq as viewed from the gallery.
