This summer the National Trust is hosting an exhibition of the beautiful work of Japanese artist, Takumasa Ono who, in 1999 toured the United Kingdom sketching 58 of the Trust’s properties.
Following an excellent response from National Trust audiences since 2001, Takumasa Ono returns this year with the HENRO 2007 exhibition. This presents a rare opportunity to see some of Britain’s finest houses, castles and stately homes through the eyes of a Japanese artist. More than just an art exhibition HENRO 2007 is a cultural exchange of ideas and a celebration of heritage and conservation that spans the globe.
The HENRO exhibition
The exhibition will display watercolour paintings, silk screen prints and traditional Japanese ink paintings ‘Sumi-e’.
Henro is the Japanese word for pilgrimage. At the heart of the exhibition are the original paintings Ono has created during his travels in Britain. Each piece reflects Ono’s original style of painting, expressing his own mysterious world of art.
Sumi-e with HENRO
Takumasa Ono has been teaching Sumi-e for over six years at many schools in the UK and at National Trust properties. Over two thousand pupils have participated in the “Young Britain & Sumi-e” workshops and practised this traditional Japanese art. The artist will be in residence at all the HENRO exhibition venues and you will be able to find out more about his artwork and his inspiration first hand.
Prints and ‘Sumi-e’ of Takumasa Ono’s work will be sold during the exhibition. The artist has generously offered to make a donation from the proceeds to the National Trust.
Supported by Embassy of Japan, Japan 21, London Nippon Club, The National Trust Support Centre in Japan.
