Bruce Nauman Artist Talk: Paul Rooney

Bruce Nauman has been an important inspiration for artists. In this talk, artist Paul Rooney will speak about his art and working processes, and discuss his interpretation of Nauman’s work.
Paul Rooney primarily makes video works that use specific places or localities as their starting points. The soundtrack voiceovers on these video works are an important part of these pieces, and they use or reference narrative forms such as songs, audio guides, letters, and other modes of storytelling. They are spoken or sung from the position of a variety of roles or personas – such as a nightclub cloakroom attendant, a tourist guide or a hotel room attendant – that have some relationship to the places that are the ‘subjects’ of the works. The video images, of empty rooms or mundane objects, do not obviously illustrate the soundtracks, but rather allow space for the viewer to actively engage with the spoken or sung texts
Paul Rooney was born in Liverpool in 1967 and lives and works in Liverpool and Wolverhampton. He graduated form Edinburgh College of Art with a BA in drawing and painting in 1989 and with an MA in Fine Art in 1991. His group exhibitions include Pass the Time of Day, a collaboration between Gasworks Gallery London, Angel Row Gallery Nottingham, Castlefield Gallery Manchester and Collective Gallery Edinburgh (2004 – 05); Shrinking Cities, Kunst-Werke, Berlin and tour (2004); and Let Us Take You There, two person show with Susan Philipsz, Site Gallery, Sheffield and tour (2003 – 04). Rooney also featured in the recent British Art Show 2006 in Manchester.
