Not long to wait ’til 20/08

Not long to wait ’til 20/08

THERE are more than 150 reasons to celebrate Liverpool’s Capital of Culture success this weekend.

Businesses and groups across Merseyside are staging a massive variety of free and discounted events as part of the fourth annual 20/08 day on Sunday, August 20.

People can take advantage of a huge range of cultural treats, ranging from free entry to an exhibition at Tate Liverpool to taster classes in baby massage; free water sports lessons to heritage pub tours.

Each year on August 20 – groups across the region are encouraged to celebrate Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture status by making an ‘offer’ for the day. An offer can take the form of free or discounted entrance, or a special event or promotion.

Cllr Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council, said: ” 20/08 is all about giving the people of Merseyside a chance to get involved in the cultural life of the city – whether that’s dining out at a new restaurant, visiting an attraction they’ve never been to, or trying out a new sport or activity.

“The real beauty of 20/08 is that most of the things on offer are free or discounted. With more than 150 special events and discounts up for grabs – at venues right across the north west – there really is something for everyone.

“And with 20/08 falling on a Sunday this year, it’s the perfect excuse to get out and sample some of the fantastic things to see and do around the region.”

This weekend will also see Liverpool’s one stop cultural shop celebrate its first birthday. The 08 Place in Whitechapel first opened its doors on 20/08 day last year, and staff are planning a special laughter clinic to mark 12 months in business.

Jason Harborow, Chief Executive of the Liverpool Culture Company, said: “This is the fourth time the Culture Company has organised 20/08 day and the celebrations have gone from strength to strength.

“The quality of offers has been fantastic this year, and I’m delighted that so many organisations and groups have come onboard to support 20/08, giving the whole community a chance to celebrate Liverpool’s Capital of Culture success.”
