British Sign Language Events at NML. Jan-Mar 09

BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE EVENTS AT NATIONAL MUSEUMS LIVERPOOL

This weekend Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum are hosting their first British Sign Language (BSL) events of 2009 as part of National Museums Liverpool’s ongoing commitment to equal opportunities and diversity.

On Sunday 18 January at Merseyside Maritime Museum a BSL performance of Deeds Not Words tells the fascinating story of the suffragettes’ struggle, and at the International Slavery Museum interactive Tales from Africa will transport you to Africa.


Further BSL events are planned throughout the year at National Museums Liverpool’s venues. All performances are accompanied by a British Sign Language interpreter, are free and are suitable for all the family to attend.

BSL interpreted events in the first three months of 2009 include:

Deeds Not Words
Merseyside Maritime Museum
Jan 18 & Mar 8        1.30pm

On 6 February 1918, the right to vote was finally granted to women in Britain.  Learn the fascinating story of the suffragettes’ struggle and discover more about their activities in Liverpool.

Tales from Africa
International Slavery Museum
Jan 18            3.30pm

Our interactive story telling will transport you to Africa. As well as engaging with the stories children up to the age of eight are given the opportunity to wear African clothing and play musical instruments.

The Leaving of Liverpool
Merseyside Maritime Museum
Feb 17           1.30pm

Join three travellers and learn of their tales of hope and fear as they pass through Liverpool in 1854 on their way to the new world.

The wonderful adventures of Mrs Seacole
International Slavery Museum
Feb 17           2pm

A moving performance about the life of Mary Seacole who heroically nursed wounded soldiers fighting in the Crimean War.
Keep your eyes on the prize
International Slavery Museum
Mar 8              2pm

Discover the inspiring story of Diane Nash, the young woman who was one of the driving forces in the civil rights movement.
