Liverpool artwork of the week 2009-24. ‘…and the Synapse Sweetly Singing 2003′ by Bernie Lubell. ‘A Theory of Entanglement’ at FACT 19 June – 6 September 2009.
It looks like a coffin because it is a coffin but for the living. In fact you need a bit of energy to turn the lever as you recline on the wooden bed and gradually get dragged into the box. There is a network of tin-can telephones allowing communication to and from the interior. I haven’t tried it yet but will soon, my only fear is that the mechanism may get stuck when I’m inside.
Made of pine, Hemlock, music wire, Piezo’s, amps, modified speakers and caning jar lids. It measured 10′ x 16′ x 25′.
This is one of many fantastic interactive wooden machines in the exhibition.
