Liverpool artwork of the week 47. ‘Orb’ Teapot by Ann-Marie Colquhoun at Bluecoat Display Centre, 15 November 2008 to 3 January 2009
One of many beautiful silver works in the latest exhibition – A Sterling Example: Stanley Hill and the Metalworkers He Inspired
Stan Hill, the well known local silversmith who died recently aged 95, was born in Birmingham and went on to tutor in silver smithing at the Liverpool College of Art. He had a studio for many years at the Bluecoat, and over 2,800 pieces of his work were sold and exhibited at the Bluecoat Display Centre from 1959 – 2002. This exhibition brings together archive material and work by the artist, along with selected ex students who have gone on to win acclaim in the worlds of design, metal work and jewellery making.
Ann-Marie says
“As a silversmith, I am interested in how people perceive and use domestic silverware. I create objects that encourage the user to reassess how they interact with the piece given its material and unexpected form. . Each of the objects I have produced can be explored through a consideration of their intended use, material qualities, value and form. I hope to provoke a reaction in the user to reassess their certainty about common scenarios to how or when tableware is used in a contemporary setting.
The use of decoration is an important element in my current collection. The mix of different surface treatments and pattern serve to reflect an expected function, but can also draw attention to the exaggerated demands made upon a well-used object. Often subtle detailing may only be apparent by looking inside or turning the piece over, and I hope the user will enjoy this element of surprise when sharing a meal or a drink with friends.”
