Liverpool artwork of the day – Tuesday December 4 2007. ‘May Day’ by JM Cameron © V&A Images / Victoria and Albert Museum. Part of ‘Victorian Visions’ at Lady Lever Gallery from December 1 2006 to March 16 2008
This stunning exhibition presents over 40 original photographic prints. Recording the Victorian world, its people and places, they provide interesting points of comparison to many of the paintings in the gallery.
All these original prints, from the V&A collection, are highly creative and show experimentation with the relatively new medium of photography.
Photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron echo Pre-Raphaelite painting. Lady Hawarden’s haunting images of female sitters can be compared to the 18th and 19th century portraits collected by Lever. The arresting landscapes by BB Turner and Roger Fenton follow in the great tradition of British landscape painting, which is well represented in the collection.
We also have a series of free events and activities to accompany the exhibition.
