Commemorative coin captures 800-year story
A commemorative coin has been designed to celebrate the city’s landmark birthday.
Commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company, sculptor Stephen Broadbent has created an intricate 800-year timeline on the coin.
The design starts with the Liver Bird, representative of King John’s charter, and ends with a growing plant – symbolising renewal and hope for the future.
The line includes the ancient coastline and the original “pool” inlet, Liverpool castle, and a sailing ship connected to a shackled hand representing the city’s involvement in the transatlantic slave trade.
It continues with the Liverpool skyline during the Blitz, the shape of a guitar reflecting the 60s cultural revival, and a Ford Anglia, symbolic of important post-war car manufacturing when the Liverpool as a sea port declined.
The other side of the coin features the 2007 Liver Bird logo.
The coin will be presented in a special commemorative box with an explanation about the thought behind the design.
Commemorative coins were also produced in 1957 and in 1907, when the medallion featured an image of King John who presented Liverpool with its first charter in 1207.
They retail at £4.99 and are available at the 08 Place in Whitechapel, St George’s Hall and the Liverpool 08 online shop. A golden, limited-edition, collectors coin has also been produced, available for £9.99.
