Tiber Young Producers commission artist Neil Keating to co-create stunning mural for new Lodge Lane building

Tiber Young Producers have today unveiled a stunning mural for the new Tiber building on Lodge Lane in a project with Tate Liverpool. The group of 14–18-year-olds commissioned and collaborated with artist Neil Keating to create the unique design which reflects the L8 area, their lives and their passion for what the new Tiber building will do.

Following on from the work Tiber Young Producers did on the award-winning The Threads That Bind Us project with Tate Liverpool at the Met Quarter last summer, the gallery have supported the group to develop a brief and a design for a mural that will greet visitors to the Tiber Centre which will open next month.

The mural was developed through a series of workshops where the group explored Tiber’s role in the L8 community and their vision for the mural then shaped a design brief. The design is a visual representation of what Tiber does and what it means to them.

The Tiber Young Producers commented on their work on the mural.

N’Kias Coker said: “This project has really given us a more detailed understanding about what can go on in the world such as racism, not giving us young people a voice out there to express our opinions. It’s also helping our community to see how we can help and make a difference in the future.”

Kelyce Morris-Browne said: “Working with Neil has been an amazing experience and I have had so much fun working with him through the Threads That Bind Us project and with him helping us through our mural.”

The group had previously collaborated with Neil Keating during The Threads That Bind Us, with his unique and pop culture inspired creations resonating with the young people and the vibrancy of Lodge Lane. Neil’s immediately recognisable style of street art can be found adorning the walls of the city as well as billboards and brand collaborations around the UK.

Tiber Centre will provide community facilities for sport, education and cultural purposes and the new mural sits alongside other public artworks in the area, showing art has an important role at the heart of the community.

Tate Liverpool has been working with the Tiber Young Producers for more than 3 years and The Threads That Bind Us won the Community Cohesion Award at this year’s Liverpool City Region Culture & Creativity Awards. The group have previously created Future Forecast, a newly commissioned audio-visual artwork about climate change, in collaboration with Turner Prize winner Mark Leckey which was on display in the gallery at the start of 2024.
